BRITISH SECRET SERVICE

The Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), commonly known as MI6 (Military Intelligence, Section 6), is His Majesty's foreign intelligence service of the United Kingdom, tasked mainly with the covert overseas collection and analysis of human intelligence on foreign nationals in support of its Five Eyes partners. SIS is one of the British intelligence agencies and the Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service ("C") is directly accountable to the Foreign Secretary.

Formed in 1909 as the foreign section of the Secret Service Bureau, the section grew greatly during the First World War officially adopting its current name around 1920. The name "MI6" (meaning Military Intelligence, Section 6) originated as a convenient label during the Second World War, when SIS was known by many names. It is still commonly used today. The existence of SIS was not officially acknowledged until 1994. That year the Intelligence Services Act 1994 (ISA) was introduced to Parliament, to place the organisation on a statutory footing for the first time. It provides the legal basis for its operations. Today, SIS is subject to public oversight by the Investigatory Powers Tribunal and the Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament.

The stated priority roles of SIS are counter-terrorism, counter-proliferation, providing intelligence in support of cyber security, and supporting stability overseas to disrupt terrorism and other criminal activities. Unlike its main sister agencies, Security Service (MI5) and Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), SIS works exclusively in foreign intelligence gathering; the ISA allows it to carry out operations only against persons outside the British Islands. Some of SIS's actions since the 2000s have attracted significant controversy, such as its alleged complicity in acts of enhanced interrogation techniques and extraordinary rendition.

Since 1994, SIS headquarters have been in the SIS Building in London, on the South Bank of the River Thames.

The Armed Forces insignia

In this fictional John Storm adventure, the ocean conservationist and marine archaeologist is head hunted by the Ministry of Defence for his unique skills and the use of the Elizabeth Swann, solar and hydrogen powered trimaran, his contemporaries are so envious of.

Since World War II, the secret service have been trying to develop the hacking capabilities of CyberCore Genetica, and were unwilling to offer the sums of money 'Billy The Kid' was offered in the now famous bidding round, when it was offered to world leaders, by the Californian. Even the United States was outbid. But secretly, they all thought wrongly, that their scientists and computer technologists would be able to replicate the super nano-computer. Only the group trying to replicate Cleopatra form the remains of her Mummy, had a desperate need for the technology immediately, for their DNA experiments.

Ever since then, 'Q' Branch had been working as fast as they could, to no avail. The USA was doing the same, as was China, Europe (NATO), India, Iran, Japan and Russia. But, they were all missing something. A discovery made by Will Bates, that he was not about to share. Not since he'd been paid, and signed an agreement with the buyers as to exclusivity. Also knowing, that if any of the G7 found out where he and his wife were living, they would be imprisoned and tortured to death, to get their knowledge. That was the purpose of illegal camps like Guantánamo Bay. The British had also stooped to torture on occasion during WWII, and knew the US were extracting information illegally from prisoners at their Cuban base. But then, the British Empire, like other empires, was built on slavery. the remnants of which are Banks, doing their best to enslave honest hard working people, with irresponsible lending, based on overpriced goods, such as houses in the UK, that were kept artificially high by Council's that refused point blank to build sustainable housing.

There are rotten apples in every barrel.

That is where John had put his foot down. He would not be involved in torture or unlawful detentions. Neither would Honest John. And it was only because the British Prime Minister had taken a hard line on Human Rights, that John agreed to become Commander Storm. In the process, effectively hiring the Swann, along with his services, to the MOD. The Swann became HMS Elizabeth Swann, during those missions.

Commander Storm made it plain, that wherever he discovered corruption, that he would do his utmost to wipe it out. Indeed, he at first refused the appointment, not until the king's of England made a formal apology for any tenuous or direct links to slavery. John believed at that stage that no king of England would ever make such an announcement. But, whether as a result of his drawing a line in the sand, or just from the mounting popular, international opinion, the promise was given. And during the course of the Antarctic and Neptune missions, the BBC, including via Jill Bird, confirmed that such an apology had been made. Very low key of course. There was no need to make a song and dance about it. The net result, was that the United Kingdom offered reparation packages. Much as the Government had done to investors in slavery, when abolishing slave trading.
