Bjorn Atlas is a dealer in very rare and hard to come by antiquities, such as million year old fossils. He was a member of a Swedish Antarctic team of years gone by, thus became a seasoned explorer, with several years experience of sub zero temperatures. His time on the ice was fondly remembered as a spell when commercial realities seemed unimportant. But as time went by, he enjoyed the profits from freelancing, having been hired many times, as a guide. He was a professional expedition leader.

Then, during one such foray, he discovered an insect clutch that was auctioned for enough that he could retire. And that he may well have done, had it not been for Jill Bird's news report, telling of the unthinkable, a labyrinth of tunnels under the ice, several millions of years old. To Bjorn, that could only mean on thing. All those rumors he'd heard at base camp as a rookie, could be true. The fossilized jaw he'd heard about, said to have originated in Antarctica, brought back as a souvenir by the famous Russian explorer, Fabian Gottlieb von Bellinghausen during his fabled 1820 expedition.

If there were tunnels, and the jaw was composed of keratin, the subterranean complex, could be an insect nest. From the dimensions of the jaw, though he'd only seen it as sketches, the animal from which it came must be huge. And an insect that size with razor sharp mandibles, must be a predator of some kind.

Bjorn contacted his friend and navigator, Sven Johansson. A useful ally in a tight spot. Not adverse to bending a rule or two. And from there managed to persuade the peace loving Swedish scientific and natural history concerns, to fund an expedition. This was on the tantalizing promise of prehistoric returns for their unique collection, of an as yet unidentified creature. The Göteborg Natural History Museum is Gothenburg's oldest museum with almost 200 years of history, as a collector. They display the world’s only mounted blue whale. A very old insect, of gargantuan proportions, would be something to pull in the crowds.
