Lord
James Huntington (Hunt) is an English aristocrat and long time member of the
British Geographical Society (BGS), from where he knows Sir Rodney
Baskerville.
Huntington
used a grant from the BGS to purchase an old Antarctic survey ship and refit her for
an expedition, naming her 'Hispaniola,'
after the ship in Robert
Louis Stevenson's most excellent pirate yarn.
Lord
Huntington's is always on the lookout to acquire antiquities and other
saleable items, and gets wind of the Chinese expedition to Antarctica, in
search of Fabian von Bellighausen's fabled giant fossilzed insect remains.
He
knows about Jill Bird's explorer relative, Archibold, who painted giant
prehistoric ants with dinosaur proportions. And follows a hunch, bringing
Sir Rodney into the frame.
