Storm comes face to face with a giant prehistoric insect, in a
nightmare.
King Kong is a Sectasaur, an extremely intelligent species of giant ant, that is adapted to survive in the freezing cold sub-zero temperatures of the Antarctic winters.
When they discover an enormous woolly insect, frozen solid in a block of ice, they nick-name him (her) King Kong, after the giant gorilla-like ape in the fictional films of the same name. But the scientist's call the newly discovered species: Insectasaurus rex.
As the ice thaws, the explorers are able to catalogue the details, dimensions and weight of the fur covered animal. Hoping to be able to transport it as an exhibit. Lin Pop Chang notes the size of the jaws equates accurately to the specimen brought back by Fabian von Bellinghausen in the 1820s. So, validating his claims.
Chang discovers a clutch of eggs preserved in the ice, which he plans to incubate and hatch. In order to give him a free hand and claim rights to the discovery, for sale and profit, Chang kills his team mates, when they dissent, wishing to report the find through more formal channels. Sven Johansson and Bjorn Atlas suffer the same fate when they challenge Lin Po as to his intentions. Chang also shoots Cathy Carter, leaving her for dead.
Chang packages up one of the sizeable eggs in a wooden crate, with two layers, marked for delivery to London. The top layer holds specimens of fauna and liquid samples, destined for the British and French natural history museums, and Kew gardens.
He persuades a British Antarctic survey ship that is returning to the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Southampton in the UK, to carry the crate aboard their ship, to deliver in port, for transport to London by road.
During this voyage, in the hull of a warm ship, a newly hatched Sectasaur breaks through the softwood crate, looking for food, having eaten all the faunal sample and liquids. When a crew member from the galley sees it, he attacks the creature, trying to kill it. But the newly born is far too quick, and stings and paralyses its attacker. Who then makes an impromptu meal of him, along with some of the supplies, and then another aggressive crew member. This causes mayhem onboard KoolArctic, eventually generating a scuttle the ship order from the British Navy, when they hear about the carnage. As KoolArctic sinks, King Kong swims off in the opposite direction to the crew's dinghy, coming into contact with the Atlantic Express. Just like 'Unsinkable Sam' the fortunate giant insect climbs onboard. But, is careful not to be seen, or get noticed. The creature does not want to kill any more humans, when it realises they are an intelligent species, and may benefit from their technological advances. Even beginning to understand some of their language, from listening to conversations.
Dinosaurs retreated to the farthest corners of the world as the impromptu ice age enveloped the world, thought by many scientists to have been triggered by collision with an asteroid. If being hunted by Insectasaurus Rex, especially in social packs, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Velociraptors would not have stood a chance. That is because ants are exoskeleton in design, whereas fossil remains confirm most large dinosaurs to be endoskeleton. That single feature, coupled with the speed of an insect, and their fearsome sting, would have seen the demise of any large food source, as Sectasaur numbers grew. The Bulldog ant from Australia, can jump as fast as a man can run. And their sting will paralyze any human foolish enough to get in the way.
